FCC Adopts Order To Clear The 700 Mhz Frequency PDF Print E-mail
WASHINGTON, D.C.-On Jan. 15, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) adopted an Order and Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking prohibiting the further operation, distribution and sale of devices that operate in the 700 MHz frequency band. This area of frequencies, previously used by television channels in the "UHF" band of transmission, had been in ad hoc use by wireless microphones and other wireless data transmission devices (DMX, et al).

The FCC order makes it clear that these unlicensed devices cannot continue to operate in this band as they may cause harmful interference to public safety entities and next generation consumers devices that will be utilizing the 700 MHz frequency. Current users of equipment that use the 700 MHz frequency have until June 12, 2010, one year from the DTV transition, to change to complying equipment.

The 700 MHz band will be used for communications services for public safety and the deployment of next generation 4G wireless devices for consumers.

The Commission is supplying a consumer outreach plan in order to assist consumers who have previously purchased wireless microphone systems and other related devices that utilized the 700 MHz band. Through the Commission's website, www.fcc.gov/cgb/wirelessmicrophones, techs can learn whether their wireless device is currently operating in the prohibited band and whether their devices may be retuned to operate on another band. You can also call 1-888-CALL-FCC to ask questions regarding this transition.

While I am sad to see the bandwidth getting smaller for those of us who use wireless devices for entertainment and religious purposes, I am glad to finally have clarity on the subject.

Just goes to show you that if you want to be a criminal and not get in trouble, go into government work! It was sure nice of the feds to sell the 700Mhz band right out from under us. Now my church has $6000 of perfectly operating worthless electronics that we'll have to replace.

Maybe Obama's bailout will help us! Hah!!

Agreed, trying to convince my Church Administrators of the necessity of this change (and the price tag associated with it) has been next to impossible without because there has been no definitive information on this subject. At least now we know the details.

Our choir director got a 'great deal' on three Sennheiser RFs last year. The dealer never mentioned they would be obsolete in a few months....

How does this relate to the Canadian market? We aren\'t subject to FCC Regulations, but airwaves don\'t stop at the border. Does anyone know?

The FCC has not helped the issue as they still haven't made any definite decisions on anything else. So if we go spend thousands on replacing the now illegal gear, there's no guarantee the FCC won't decide that spectrum should be sold off to computer companies as well in another year or two...

You may as well have given me a loaded pistol so I can blow out my brains instead of having to magically find $28,000 to replace our ENTIRE rig, like ANYBODY in the industry has money to upgrade and change over in this totally screwed economy. F**K the feds and their bills. How the hell can they steal what was given to us decades ago? I am going to lose my company. What the f**k?!? How is it that we completely failed to fight this bill? Maybe Obama can give ME $15,000,000 to bail out my company too huh?

Had those of us using RF mics in this band had actually registered their use with the FCC, a requirement, perhaps the FCC long ago would have seen the very large number of systems in use and dealt with the issue differently. Unfortunately we had a very small voice. The company I work for has well over $150K worth of systems that will be replaced....

Those Washington bureaucrats were only interested in taking the billions in fees they made from selling off those frequency bands that were STOLEN from us! No compensation or even some small tax credits. Like many others, I washed $30,000 worth of wireless systems down the drain. It only ads insult to financial injury to know that I will also be a criminal if caught using equipment I purchased legally (and paid taxes on) just a few short years ago.
